Freedom Project

Overview

I lead a team in designing a new site concept for Freedom Project that emphasized their message in a warm, engaging style. As I functioned as a designer on the team I mainly worked with illustrator to create the mockups while using my knowledge of Wordpress, PHP and Javascript to guide the rest of the team and create a site that was responsive, user friendly, and optimized for speed.

About the Client

Freedom Project is a non-profit organization that works with prisoners to teach them mindfulness and non-violent communication.

They needed a website that conveyed their message without relying on images so we focused on simple graphics and illustrations in the site. They also wanted a warm and inviting aesthetic and an updated more modern look.

Design

Since photos were difficult for them to procure they wanted a design that utilized graphics and illustrations instead. These images needed to be very simple, positive, and mostly non-descript because of the sensitive subject matter they needed to address on their site. I created much of the graphics in Adobe Illustrator as well as modifying some open-source imagery.

The color palette was based on their existing brand colors while softening the tone to make them more calming and inviting.

Development

I did get to work a bit on the development of this site on some of the more challenging features. One of those features was creating dynamic ‘gateway’ pages that pulled the content of inner pages using custom queries and Wordpress’s dynamic templating system.

The design is fully responsive incorporating mobile, tablet, and desktop sizes. It also maximizes the power of Wordpress by utilizing its dynamic templating system to populate main category pages with content of their inner pages
